Merseyrail is introducing new contactless payments at train stations ticket barriers across Liverpool , as part of the second phase of a new smart ticketing system.
This new system that has been launched today, means passengers can now pay contactless using a smart device at ticket barriers, as part of the ‘Tap & Go’ scheme that Merseyrail introduced in August 2025.
The first rollout of the new barrier systems in Liverpool has been placed in Liverpool Central Station, which see’s roughly 12 million passengers every year, according to data from Open Media UK.

The Merseyrail.org website says the new introduction of contactless payments at ticket barriers will make journeys “quicker, easier, and more convenient for thousands of passengers every day.”
Liverpool City Region Mayor, Steve Rotherham, first announced the new London- style scheme back in 2020 and hopes it will reduce congestion and disruptions at train stations across the city.
In a recent press release, he said: “I know just how much easier Tap & Go has made life for passengers. It means no more early-morning queues, guaranteed best-value fares, and a smoother journey from start to finish.
“This smart ticketing pilot takes us another step closer to delivering the modern, 21st-century transport network our residents deserve – and I’m really looking forward to seeing the new system fully rolled out in the new year.”
Mr. Rotherham also hopes that the convenience of the system will encourage city- workers out of their cars and use the public transport, increasing air quality in the city.
Originally, the Tap&Go system only worked for passengers who owned a MetroCard, but the second phase will mean passengers can use Apple Pay, Google Pay, credit or Debit cards at ticket barriers.
Merseyrail are urging passengers to contact Merseyrail Customer Relations on 0151 555 1111 if passengers have any difficulty or issues with the new system, or to contact them on X at @merseyrail.
