Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultan stood united when appearing to a crowd of hundreds at Liverpool’s ‘Your Party’ meeting.
The event took place at St. George’s Hall and follows a month of uncertainty after Sultana and Corbyn had a public disagreement over the formation of a membership portal.
The two have now made a public stance of unity with sultana saying in her speech ‘Now I know that the past few weeks many of you have felt frustrated and disappointed about the launch process. I've felt that too. So let me be absolutely clear. My motivation has always been to strengthen our collective project to build a genuinely democratic socialist party worthy of the struggles that have come before us to fight for
maximum member democracy. It has been regrettable and for my part I want to say
I'm truly sorry.’
People interested in ‘Your party’ gathered to hear speeches from Sultana and Corbyn and have questions about the party answered by the two.
Both used their speeches to talk about wanting to form a new kind of community based approach to try and tackle the current political establishment.
Corbyn also made clear that he believes
'Trans rights are human rights,’ this comes after many potential supporters of your party have worried what his stance on trans rights is.
The meeting was organised and chaired by local councillor Alan Gibbons.
Gibbons is a former labour councillor who was suspended for not accepting cuts imposed by the ruling Labour Party and then later expelled for giving an interview to the socialist appeal.
He told the meeting that his group of independent councillors in Liverpool city council would now be know as ‘Your Party’ councillors and then joked that it will be the shortest party name in history, if the membership vote for a new one.
